Two ice floes appear to loom up out of the mist, now and then vanishing again in ribbons of fog. On reflection, the ice floes are not what they seemed to be but are, rather, two hands, moving subtly alongside each other. The slow movement, as well as light and shadow, turn the hands into abstractions that can scarcely be identified as body parts anymore. Nan Hoover’s videotapes more often evoke associations with quiescent ‘landscapes’. The subtle action of forms, the stationary camera and the lack of editing create an atmosphere of tranquility. This atmosphere is enhanced by the low tones of the accompanying music, conjuring up a mysterious ambiance.
